What is 5G? – Understanding The New Technology

The next telecommunications standards - 5G is the coming fifth-generation wireless broadband technology. An important goal of 5G is to erase the differences between wireline and wireless networking to accommodate the growing mobility of network users. Major Specifications are.

Latency
5G wireless technology have must lower latency than 4G – latency being the time needed for a packet of data to move across a network or series of networks. Nokia believes 5G will be a system that provides a “scalable and flexible service experience with virtually zero latency” The below 1 ms latency will enable users to enjoy faster download and upload speed. Low latency will also facilitate real-time communication between a wide range of connected devices.

Bandwidth - Speed

Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be moved (uploaded or downloaded) through a network over a given time. 5G has a peak download speed of  20 Gb/s while 4G sits at just 1 Gb/s. From a peak speed perspective, 5G is 20 times faster than 4G.
Spectrum
One fundamental difference is 5G’s use of unique radio frequencies to achieve what 4G networks cannot. 4G networks use frequencies below 6 GHz, but 5G will likely use extremely high frequencies in the 30 GHz to 300 GHz range. We can stay connected everywhere includes high speed Trains (or) Planes.
Connection Density
4G connects 100 thousand devices per square km but 5G connects 1 million devices per square km. This upgraded network is to support the growing number of devices that demand internet access. This upgrade will boost up the sectors such as Internet of Things (IoT), Smart cities, Connected Cars, e-health etc,.
Date Traffic
5G will support 50 Exabytes / Month which is up from current level of 7.2 Exabytes / Month of 4G.
Energy Efficient
4G towers that fire data in all directions, potentially wasting both energy and power to beam radio waves at locations that aren't even requesting access to the internet. 5G also uses shorter wavelengths, which means that antennas can be much smaller than existing antennas while still providing precise directional control.

Secure Networks
5G provides more secure network which will be used for police and security professionals and gives more privacy.

Industry 4.0
5G will be an enabling factor for Industry 4.0. It help to improve flexibility in production, cut costs and create a safer working environment.
Internet of Things – IoT
Technologies like IoT (Connected Devices) are set to change the way machines and humans communicate. Devices will need to become smarter, as they will act as networking nodes rather than just terminals. 5G networks will be faster and smarter which accelerates the growth of IoT.
